The University of Southampton's proud record for preparing highly skilled graduates has been recognised with a multi-million pound package to support defence-related careers.

More than £6.6m has been awarded to the University to boost undergraduate places and fund investment in teaching facilities for computing, cyber and robotics programmes.

The funding will also accelerate the development of an exciting new Robotics undergraduate degree programme due to be launched in 2027.

This investment is part of an £80 million funding programme announced by the Ministry of Defence and the Department for Education, in partnership with the Office for Students. It was designed to connect education more closely to the defence sector's skills needs.

The University of Southampton is one of just 24 institutions selected for funding from a highly competitive field of 112 applicants.

Professor David Richards, the University's Director of Military Education, said: "Demand for our computing and engineering programmes continues to grow strongly, and this investment will enable us to expand capacity, enhance our facilities, and invest in state-of-the-art teaching equipment.

"In doing so, we are strengthening the pipeline of graduates equipped with cutting-edge, defence-relevant skills that will make a significant contribution to the UK's future capability."

Students will also benefit from additional defence-related placements, project opportunities and skills-led activities, as well as tailored careers support.

Funds will be invested in creating extra computer labs in the University's planned new STEM building. Construction of this landmark teaching facility at the University's Highfield Campus is due to start in November.

The investment comes as part of the government's Strategic Priorities Grant and boosts places for students from across the UK, helping to build skills and drive growth across the country.

Minister for Skills Jacqui Smith said: "A strong defence sector needs a strong skills pipeline. This investment will help thousands more people gain the qualifications needed for rewarding careers in defence, working to protect our national security and boost our economic growth.

"By expanding access to high-demand courses in the defence sector, we are creating new opportunities for learners across the country while helping employers access the skilled workforce they need.

"This is a clear example of education and industry working together to deliver growth, strengthen Britain's defence capability and support the jobs of the future."

The University of Southampton demonstrates a strong and proactive commitment to the Armed Forces community, formalised through our signing of the Armed Forces Covenant in October 2023. This affirms our pledge to ensure fair and equitable treatment for serving personnel, veterans, reservists and their families across all university activities. The University is also a Bronze Award holder under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.
