Statement from CFA Board Chair Greg Wilson

On behalf of the CFA Board, I would like to advise you that Jason Heffernan has been appointed as CFA's Chief Officer.

Statement from CFA Board Chair Greg Wilson

Jason is currently Assistant Commissioner of the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) and Director Area Operations, having been a volunteer for more than two decades.

Jason has performed a number of senior roles across the RFS, including recently as Deputy Commissioner, leading service delivery for the world's largest volunteer-based fire service, with 2000 brigades and 76,000 volunteers.

Jason brings to the role extensive skill in strategic leadership, emergency response, and community protection, with advocacy and development of volunteer capability in a diverse workforce.

His previous roles with RFS have included Director Regional Services and Director Response and Coordination, along with front line Regional and District Management, giving him broad experience in the coordination of fire and emergency services, in particular during some of NSW's most challenging fire seasons including last season's black summer.

Commencing his career as a volunteer firefighter more than 20 years ago, he is a strong advocate of volunteer community-based emergency services. In addition to his functions with the NSW RFS, he also provides strategic advice and guidance to the NSW Volunteer Rescue Association on behalf of the New South Wales Government.

Jason's appointment as Chief Officer will take effect on 30 November and I know you will join me in congratulating him and welcoming him to CFA.

On behalf of the Board, we would like to acknowledge and thank Deputy Chief Officer Garry Cook who has been Acting Chief Officer since the end of June.

Garry is to be commended for his outstanding commitment and dedication in supporting CFA members and staff throughout the implementation of fire services reform.

Garry will remain Acting Chief Officer until Jason takes up his appointment.
