Structure fire, South Mackay

Three police officers have been injured after rescuing a 60-year-old man from a fire in his South Mackay residence overnight.

Just after 10.30pm last night, police responded to the McDonald Street unit block and observed a unit fully involved in fire.

Police forced entry to the building through a window after hearing the 60-year-old man inside. The three officers rescued him from the building and immediately commenced first aid.

He was later transported to hospital with significant burns to his body.

The senior constable and two constables were also assessed for smoke inhalation suffered as a result of rescuing the man.

A crime scene has since been established with further investigations being conducted today to determine the cause of the fire.
