Susana Narotzky, professor at the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Barcelona, has been appointed a member of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council (ERC), effective from 1 January 2026. The term of office will be limited to four years, renewable once.
The European Research Council, consisting of an independent scientific council and an executive agency, is the main European institution dedicated to funding cutting-edge research based exclusively on scientific excellence. The Scientific Council, composed of 22 internationally renowned scientists, serves as its governing body and is responsible for defining its scientific strategy, designing and approving work programmes, and ensuring quality and transparency in project selection and management.
This appointment represents international recognition of Narotzky's academic career, marked by excellence. Among her most significant achievements is her leadership, as principal investigator, of the project "Grassroots economics: meaning, project and practice in the pursuit of livelihood (GRECO)", awarded an Advanced Grant, which explores local economic practices and survival strategies in crisis contexts in Spain. In addition, Narotzky is the author of an extensive body of work considered a reference in the field of economic anthropology. She has been awarded the Ramón Menéndez Pidal National Research Prize in the field of humanities and has received five-year grants from the ICREA Academia programme (now Academy of Excellence programme) on three occasions. A current member of the Academia Europaea, she has held positions of great responsibility: she has chaired the European Association of Social Anthropologists and the Social Sciences Area of the State Research Agency, and has been secretary and member of the executive board of the American Anthropological Association.
