Expect to soon see plenty of deadly hairstyles around Darwin's rural area with the opening of a purpose-built hairdressing facility at Taminmin College today.
The school transformed an old engineering room into a state-of-the-art hairdressing facility, featuring three washing stations & three hair grooming stations where 20 students have commenced a Certificate II Salon Assistant in Hairdressing.
The school is catering to the needs of students and the national skills shortage through the delivery of 19 Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses, including automotive, construction, engineering, hospitality, business, racing (stablehand), retail, community services (childcare), agriculture, rural operations, animal care, agrifoods and now hairdressing.
Bradley Blair from Taminmin College said learning a trade and being able to implement that at your own school gives students a sense of pride and motivation to succeed.
"We are during a national skills shortage and our range of VET courses go a long way in equipping young people with the skills and qualifications needed to work in industries such as hairdressing and childcare," he said.
"The hairdressing course has been very popular with 20 students already enrolled to complete their qualifications and then go onto paid employment."
"Students need a variety of pathways to develop career choices that suit their needs."
Taminmin College currently has 54 school-based apprenticeships, creating sustainable opportunities for students as well as helping local businesses secure apprentices.
The school is renowned for its success in Vocational Education and Training, this was reinforced again last year with teacher Justin Burgess winning VET Trainer of the Year and student Tayla Hebbron announced the VET in Schools Student of the Year category.
In 2021, the school won the coveted Small Training Provider of the Year Award both at the state and Australian level.
