The Northern Territory Police Territory Safety Division (TSD) has conducted a targeted deployment to Wadeye, aimed at disrupting offending, reducing the supply of illicit substances and improving community safety after recent unrest.
The deployment was undertaken in support of local police and forms part of TSD's broader remit to provide surge capacity to regional and remote locations in response to emerging operational demand and community safety concerns.
During the deployment between 11-14 September, police seized:
- 26 litres of wine
- 41 litres of beer
- 40 litres of spirits
- 513 grams of cannabis
- Numerous weapons
The total estimated street value of the alcohol, drugs and other items seized exceeds $90,000.
The deployment also resulted in:
- 6 arrests involving TSD members
- 7 Liquor Infringement Notices
- 3 Drug Infringement Notices
- 2 Traffic Infringement Notices
- 1 Notice to Appear
Territory Safety Division Superintendent Joshua Cunningham said the results demonstrate the value of proactive policing and TSD's ability to provide additional operational capability where it is required.
"Territory Safety Division continues to support frontline police across the Northern Territory through targeted operations and surge deployments.
" The recent violence and unrest we have seen out of the community is completely unacceptable and the safety of residents is our number one priority.
"This deployment has removed significant quantities of alcohol, illicit drugs and weapons from the community, while also identifying and holding offenders accountable."
"Importantly, these results were achieved by TSD members working alongside local police, combining their local knowledge and experience with the additional resources and capability provided through the deployment."
"Our regional and remote members operate in challenging environments and TSD will continue to support them when additional resources are required."
The Northern Territory Police Force will continue to undertake intelligence-led and proactive operations targeting the unlawful supply of alcohol and drugs, weapons offences and other criminal activity across the Territory.
