Top A-Level results for Liverpool’s specialist Maths School

The first cohort of students at the new University of Liverpool’s specialist Mathematics School received their A-Level results today. The new school’s first students joined in September 2020 from schools across the Liverpool City Region. 25 students took A-Levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and/or Computer Science.

  • The average grade across all entries was A
  • Over one third (36%) of students achieved 3 A* or A grades
  • 87% of A-Level entries achieved A*, A or B grades
  • 59% of entries achieved A* or A grades
  • 20% of entries achieved A* grades
  • A-Level Mathematics: 96% A*-B, 76% A*-A
  • A-Level Computer Science: 88% A*-B, 65% A*-A
  • A-Level Physics: 83% A*-B, 52% A*-A
  • A-Level Further Mathematics: 80% A*-B, 45% A*-A
  • 56% of students achieved at least AAB in facilitating subjects

Headteacher Damian Haigh said: “We have been proud of these delightful students since we first started working with them through our outreach programme in 2019: they have consistently demonstrated intellectual curiosity and a strong commitment to the aims of this specialist school. It is astonishing to see such consistently high results and a great source of pride for students who have been through a very difficult time throughout the pandemic.

When we have challenged them with difficult problems and offered extra opportunities to learn they have responded with enthusiasm and appreciation. They have helped our dedicated staff team to establish a unique educational institution which offers specialism and depth in its academic aims whilst also providing a very broad pastoral curriculum and a wide range of sporting and extra curricular activities. Our students are immersed in mathematics and science from the moment they join us, and we have enjoyed completing Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards, attending concerts, visiting universities, playing sports every week, and much more besides. I am grateful for everything the students and the staff have done to establish a wonderful new opportunity for Merseyside children, and these fantastic A-Level results give us great cause for celebration.”

Locally and nationally we need many more students with this high level of interest, knowledge and skill in STEM. I am confident that these first graduates of the University of Liverpool Maths School have a very bright future.”

University Admissions

Almost all students have accepted offers to study at university or have been accepted onto a high level apprenticeship. Students will be taking up places at institutions including the University of Liverpool, Manchester Leeds and York amongst others.

The University of Liverpool Mathematics School is a centre of excellence in raising attainment in the Liverpool City Region, supporting and influencing the teaching of mathematics in the surrounding area.

It is the third specialist mathematics school in the UK and the first in the North of England. It offers 16 – 19 year olds the opportunity to study an innovative and challenging A Level curriculum in Mathematics, Further Maths, Physics and Computer Science as well as the school’s own Aspiring Mathematician and Personal & Pastoral Enrichment Programmes.
