TSU Will Produce Substances For Domestic Cosmetics

Specialists of Polyplast Engineering, which is part of the Engineering Chemical Technology Center (ICTC) of Tomsk State University (TSU), will develop technological regulations for the production of priority chemical products: propylparaben and methylparaben. These substances are intended for the production of cosmetics. The need to develop Russian analogues is caused by the suspension of supplies from abroad. The work will be performed within a grant from the Agency for Technological Development (ATD).

ICTC is one of the developers of the strategy for the development of the chemical industry in Russia until 2042 and specializes in scaling scientific developments and solving production problems using high-tech technologies. Their assets include three production sites and hundreds of implemented projects aimed at developing the chemical industry in Russia and ensure import substitution.

The purpose of the ATD grant is to stimulate the creation of technological regulations for the serial production of critical products for the chemical and biotechnological industries. Both substances are necessary for the production of cosmetics. They are used as preservatives that prevent the growth of bacteria and a number of types of fungi, which makes cosmetic products safe for consumers.

- Employees of two laboratories of the Faculty of Chemistry of Tomsk State University are responsible for the scientific component of the project: specialists from the laboratory of organic synthesis together with the laboratory of physicochemical methods of analysis. They are working on the development of a chain for the production of final methylparaben and propylparaben. By the end of 2025, three variants of prototypes of each substance should be obtained, - said Ivan Mutas, director of Polyplast Engineering.

Later, ICTC will create facilities with a capacity of at least 4.5 tons per year of methylparaben and 1.5 tons of propylparaben per year. At each stage, experimental batches of substances will be obtained and analyzed. The end consumer of the products within the framework of the project will be EUROCOSMED-Stupino, which is part of the DRC group (known under the trademark R.O.C.S.). DRC is one of the leaders in Russia in the production of oral care products, cosmetics, medical devices, ingredients and pharmaceutical substances.

All works under the ATD grant - from the stage of research and development to the industrial production - should be completed by March 2027.
