Two Women Face Five Animal Ill-Treatment Charges in SA

Cases scheduled for court hearings in April 2024

Two women, both aged 32, are due to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court after being jointly charged with five counts of animal ill-treatment. The charges relate to 16 cats and kittens, two Maremma dogs (one found in emaciated condition, the other thin and found locked inside a small crate) and two rabbits. All the animals were allegedly being kept in poor living conditions at a property in Adelaide's northern suburbs. They are now in protective custody with RSPCA SA.

A 60-year-old man and 39-year-old woman are due to face the Elizabeth Magistrates Court to face three charges of animal ill-treatment. The first charge is for alleged failure to provide appropriate and adequate food, water, living conditions or exercise for two ponies and a horse. All the animals were found in emaciated condition on a property south of Gawler. The second charge is for alleged failure to get veterinary treatment for one of the ponies, who was very unwell and had a large, infected wound on her face, neck and jaw area caused by a dog attack two weeks prior. The third charge is for alleged failure to provide appropriate and adequate food, water, living conditions or exercise and alleged failure to mitigate harm suffered by two dogs. One was emaciated, the other thin and suffering a severe chronic ear infection and both were bleeding and itching with huge flea burdens.

A 47-year-old woman is due to face the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on five counts of animal ill-treatment after RSPCA SA inspectors found 19 cats and three dogs living in squalid conditions in an Adelaide beachside suburb. Euthanasia was the only humane option for five of the kittens, who were emaciated, flea-ridden and suffering severe congenital deformities and feline flu. One of the dogs, an elderly female mixed-breed, was also euthanased after medical tests revealed she was suffering an aggressive form of cancer. The remaining animals have either been adopted or remain in protective custody with RSPCA SA.

A 50-year-old-woman and her 24-year-old niece are due to appear in the Whyalla Magistrates Court on two counts of ill-treatment of an animal in relation to two dogs found in emaciated condition on their Whyalla property. One dog was surrendered and has been rehomed while the other remains in protective custody with RSPCA SA.

A 31-year-old woman from the northern suburbs has been arrested under warrant after failing to attend court in 2020. The woman is facing a charge of ill-treatment of an animal in relation to an extremely emaciated dog and is due to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court. The dog recovered in RSPCA SA care and was rehomed.

A 52-year-old man from Adelaide's northern suburbs is due to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on two charges of ill-treatment of an animal in relation to two dogs, one of which was in need of urgent veterinary treatment. The defendant is facing two further counts of animal ill-treatment in relation to two cats and a pig.
