UNC Medicine School Ranks 6th for NIH Public University Funding

The UNC School of Medicine ranked 19^th in the country in total National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for federal fiscal year 2023 and 6^th among peer public universities, according to a new report published by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. The total dollar amount is $343,679,736. This amount does not include research and development contracts with the NIH.

Each basic science department's ranking is below, including each ranking among public universities in parentheses:

Biochemistry & Biophysics, 5^th (4^th)

Biomedical Engineering, 8^th (4^th)

Cell Biology & Physiology, 2^nd (2^nd)

Genetics, 4^th (1^st)

Microbiology & Immunology, 8^th (4^th)

Eleven clinical departments rank in the top 30 for NIH funding. Each department ranking among public schools is in parentheses:

Another measure of success is found in our collaborative efforts across disciplines at the school and throughout UNC-Chapel Hill, which would be impossible without our dedicated faculty, graduate students, postdocs, and staff, all working toward a better understanding of human health and disease each day."

The total amount of research funding to the school, including from the NIH, stands at more than half a billion dollars and accounts for more than half of the research funding to UNC-Chapel Hill.

The UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health is ranked 4^th in total NIH funding, 1^st among public universities. The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is ranked 2^nd behind UC-San Francisco.
