UNESCO Chief Denounces Murder of Lebanese Media Workers

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of media workers Farah Omar and Rabih Me'mari in Lebanon on 21 November 2023.

I condemn the killings of Farah Omar and Rabih Me'mari. The protection of journalists and media workers as civilians is a requirement under international law, including UN Security Council Resolution 2222/2015 on the protection of journalists, media professionals and associated personnel in situations of conflict. I call for a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances of their deaths.

Farah Omar was a reporter and Rabih Me'mari a cameraman, both for Al Mayadeen TV. They were reportedly killed in a rocket strike in the town of Tayr Harfa, in southern Lebanon near the Israeli border, while reporting on hostilities in the region.
