The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has placed The University of Western Australia in the world's top 10 in Mining and Mineral Engineering (5th), Marine/Ocean Engineering (7th) and Clinical Medicine, which has risen from position 39 in 2018 to 8th in 2019 - the best result of any Australian university.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater said that all Western Australians should be proud of the exceptional results.

"At this magnificent university, sitting on the banks of the Swan River in this beautiful city on the western edge of a continent, we are doing some of the greatest research work in the world," Professor Freshwater said.

"In the past year we have put a lot of effort into recruiting the best academics from around the world through our 'Be Inspired' campaign," Professor Freshwater said.

"Our aim with 'Be Inspired' was to attract the best researchers and teachers from around the globe to achieve our mission of leading innovation and teaching excellence. Those researchers and teachers are helping bring out the best in our staff and students. Together, we're showing the world what Western Australia can do.

"Through our partnerships and subsequent investments in the Harry Perkins Institute and Telethon Kids, two of WA's premier research centres, we have achieved a collaborative team WA approach to delivering world-class outcomes for our community. This is now being recognised across the globe."

The rankings are compiled by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, an independent organisation dedicated to research in higher education intelligence and consultation.
