Members of the Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center communities pay tribute to retiring U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, BA'62, for his influential roots as a Vanderbilt undergraduate, his many years of dedicated public service, and his legacy of support for higher education, research and innovation.
Alexander, a three-term senator representing his home state of Tennessee, retires from the U.S. Senate on Jan. 3, 2021.
In a career spanning some 50 years and including terms as governor of Tennessee (1979-87), U.S. secretary of education (1991-93), U.S. senator (2003-21) and chair of the influential Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee since 2015, Alexander has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of his constituents and all Americans. His actions, words and influence have helped ensure that institutions like Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center can continue to solve humanity's greatest challenges and support a healthy and prosperous society.
