We Need Long Term Plan For Community Sport Infrastructure: Act Greens & Federal Labor

Australian Greens

ACT Greens MLA for Brindabella and ACT Greens Spokesperson for Sports & Recreation Johnathan Davis MLA was delighted to hear Federal Labor Member for Bean David Smith MP on 666 ABC Canberra this morning, saying we need a 5 to 10 year plan for community sport infrastructure in the ACT.

The ACT Greens have been calling for such a plan since the 2020 ACT Election.

Mr Smith said:

"Over the last few months I've been talking to major sports about the need to pull together a 5 to 10 year plan for all our sporting infrastructure and how we can deliver that".

"In April 2021, I moved a motion in the ACT Legislative Assembly calling on the ACT Government to, among other things, 'Develop a long-term strategic plan for sport and recreation in the ACT…' and 'Develop a facilities management plan to care for existing facilities and meet community need with new facilities…', Mr Davis said.

"I'm pleased to see an ally in the campaign for better community sports infrastructure in my own local Member. I appreciate that the Minister for Sport & Recreation provided an update on the ACT Government's work so far in responding to my motion in the last sitting week. The update suggests that there is still a lot of work to do.

"We have seen at the federal level what happens when community sport infrastructure funding lacks accountability and transparency (Sports rorts anyone?). I would hope that our progressive government aspires to the highest standard of accountability and transparency when it comes to funding community sports infrastructure in the ACT.

"I look forward to providing a more detailed response in the ACT Legislative Assembly this Thursday afternoon."
