Western Australians benefit from easier access to pathology results

  • PathWest becomes the first pathology provider in WA to upload results to My Health Record
  • Move empowers people with their own health information
  • Makes blood test and other specimen results more easily accessible
  • PathWest is now fully connected to the My Health Record system, providing Western Australians with convenient access to their pathology results.

PathWest is the only pathology provider in WA connected to My Health Record, uploading results from any blood or specimen collection taken in a public hospital or at a PathWest Collection Centre.

Western Australian patients now have the option to choose a pathology provider that will provide secure access to pathology results via My Health Record, allowing them to work with their clinicians to make informed decisions about their health.

A patient's requesting doctor will have access to results as soon as they are available, with patient access available seven days later.

PathWest, Health Support Services and the Australian Digital Health Agency have worked together to ensure this important milestone could be reached - giving WA patients access to their own records as quickly as possible.

PathWest is also the only pathology provider in the country to upload results for patients of all ages, unlike other States which only upload results for people over 14 years of age.

PathWest began uploading public hospital pathology results in December 2018 and all other results in October 2019.

As stated by Health Minister Roger Cook:

"PathWest plays an important role for patients and is a critical part of healthcare in WA. This development provides patients and consumers who choose to use PathWest with an enhanced service.

"PathWest is empowering patients to manage and view their personal health information. This is another way the McGowan Government is putting patients first.

"An estimated 70 per cent of all clinical decisions and 100 per cent of cancer diagnoses rely on pathology. So providing accessible results to patients and their doctors as quickly as possible is essential.

"Until now, only public hospital pathology results were being uploaded to My Health Record. Results from specimens collected at our community and hospital-based collection centres will now also be uploaded."
