Yale's Miia Kivipelto has witnessed the stigma surrounding Alzheimer's disease firsthand. A world-renowned neuroscientist, she has worked with more patients than she can count who waited a long time before seeing a doctor. Even after diagnosis, some of her patients were reluctant to share their diagnosis with loved ones.
"It's much easier to start talking about your back pain, your headache, or something else," said Kivipelto, who is now the Rodman Family endowed professor of gerontology at Yale School of Nursing (YSN) and director of its Center for Aging Well. "But when you start talking about memory, it's not as easy."
