More homes were built in 2025 in South Australia than in any other year as the Malinauskas Labor Government continues to deliver record breaking housing growth.
According to ABS Building Activity Data, 13,514 were completed in South Australia 2025, 1,600 more than were built in 2024.
On top of this, 14,700 homes commenced construction in South Australia – an increase of 2,700 compared with 2024.
The momentum created by the significant focus on housing policy within the Premier's Housing Roadmap has set the pace for the Malinauskas Government to deliver on its target to build 13,500 homes each year.
The Premier outlined in a key address to the Council for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) in the lead up to last month's state election, the need for 13,500 homes to be built year-after-year in South Australia to deliver on the state's incredible economic opportunities.
South Australia saw a 22% rise in commencements and a 14% increase in completions from 2024 to 2025, which is stronger than the national growth rates of 16% for commencements and a 3% drop in completions, demonstrating South Australia's strong performance in the housing sector.
Building more homes for South Australians was a central focus of the Malinauskas Labor Government's re-election pitch at last month's state election.
The plan commits $1 billion to fast-track strategic land and apartment development, $140 million to renovate vacant public housing, $29 million to train 1,000 new tradies to build more homes and a significant expansion of the government's innovative Rent To Own scheme to 2,000 more homes.
As put by Peter Malinauskas
More homes were built in South Australia last year than ever before.
That's 13,514 South Australian families achieving the dream of home ownership.
We set a target of 13,500 homes a year because that's what our growing state needs, and in 2025 we delivered.
But meeting a target once isn't enough - we need to hit it year after year after year.
The momentum our Housing Roadmap has given us will be sped up by the billion-dollar housing plan we took to the election.
We will not slow down building more homes for South Australians.

Every one of these 13,514 completions represents a real home – whether it's a young couple's first house, a family upgrading or a key worker finally finding a place close to their job.
These numbers are no accident. They are a result of direct result of the planning reforms and policy settings we've put in place through the Housing Roadmap.
We've got a plan to do even more, by investing in more land releases, more public housing and more tradies to keep building.
As put by Jenny Hall, CEO Uniting SA
It is exciting to see this record growth in housing.
When people have access to safe and affordable housing, lives change. A stable home gives people the foundation they need to dream bigger and live better.
UnitingSA has just completed building 70 affordable homes at Uniting on Second in Bowden. Our next project, Uniting at Hawker, will deliver another 30 homes and we hope to build even more in the future.
