This month the Territory Labor Government will release a significant tender for the remaining elements of the Civic and State Square Precinct revitalisation.
The project is part of the historic Darwin City Deal and will transform the precinct into a welcoming and interactive green heart of the CBD.
The $145 million tender will deliver not only the construction of the State Square Art Gallery, but design and construction of the remaining Civic and State Square Precinct elements including:
Central Heart - a playful, shaded, flexible and active centrally located space for event as well as the everyday;State Square Art gallery - located adjacent the Central Heart with a generous grand veranda with cafes and room for events and festivals;tropical tree walk - a pedestrianised Smith Street with tall shelters for all year sun and rain protection;expansive events lawns - fully serviced for a vast array of festivals and events; andforecourts - generous pedestrianised forecourts to Parliament House and Supreme Court with welcoming and cooling water-features
A comprehensive masterplan for the precinct was completed in 2019, with work already underway and completed on a number of the infrastructure projects including:
demolition and greening of the Chan Building site;completion of the State Square underground carpark which includes the establishment of a sculpture garden;completion of the redevelopment of the former 90 bay Parliamentary car park to create public parkland and festival lawns; andLiberty Square - design commencing shortly with construction anticipated in late 2022.
Yesterday the Territory Government also awarded a $305,000 tender to Clouston Associates for the design of Liberty Square, a place within the Precinct that commemorates significant civic and cultural history.
