Dr Yoon Seok Kim, currently Postdoctoral Researcher at Stanford University, USA, as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Life Sciences in the School of Life Sciences (SV)

Yoon Seok Kim is an outstanding bioengineer who has made a significant contribution to explaining the structures of anion-conducting channelrhodopsins (light-gated ion channels). He has also made important discoveries about how synaptic activities can influence the growth of brain tumours, and about the cancer-promoting role of the mitogen neuroligin-3. Yoon Seok Kim's research programme bears upon many disciplines within the School, from neuroscience, cancer research and structural biology to in-depth technological expertise. This highly motivated scientist is ideally suited to the interdisciplinary approach of Life Sciences at EPFL.

Dr Florian Schueder, currently Visiting Scientist at ETH Zurich, as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Life Sciences in the School of Life Sciences (SV)

Florian Schueder is an acclaimed physicist specialising in the field of high-resolution microscopy and its application to biological systems. He played a key role in the development of DNA-PAINT, a super-resolution microscopy technique which makes it possible to visualise structures with extremely high resolution, down to a few nanometres. EPFL has numerous research groups working with imaging procedures and will therefore offer Florian Schueder extensive opportunities for cooperation.

Dr Marius Tiba, currently Lecturer at King's College London, United Kingdom, as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Mathematics in the School of Basic Sciences (SB)

Marius Tiba's award-winning research covers a broad spectrum in the area of combinatorics, analysis and number theory. His most important work is concerned with stability sets in geometric inequalities. At EPFL he will set up a dynamic research programme in pure mathematics, based on his wide-ranging expertise. In addition to collaborations with members of the Institute of Mathematics, his potential for cooperation will also extend beyond the Institute - for example into theoretical computer science. Marius Tiba will greatly enrich EPFL, both as a researcher and as a teacher.
