Finocchario CLP Government makes a landmark $10 million commitment to upgrade infrastructure and access in Territory parks.Funding will deliver a number of projects to unlock and improve recreation and investment opportunities. This Budget builds on the foundations of our first Budget, continuing our work to reduce crime, rebuild the economy and restore our Territory lifestyle.
The Finocchiaro CLP Government is making a $10 million landmark investment to upgrade Territory parks, enabling generations of Territorians and tens of thousands of annual visitors to enjoy our unique natural assets anew.
From BBQs and bathrooms to trails, roads, and signage, the colossal investment will unlock recreational and commercial opportunities right across the Territory's vast, 51,000 square kilometre parks estate.
Minister for Parks and Wildlife and Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Marie-Clare Boothby, said the investment was about protecting and promoting our parks and wildlife, and celebrating what makes the Territory special, making it easier for people to get out and enjoy our one-of-a-kind way of life.
"Parks are absolutely central to the Territory lifestyle, to our unique tourism offering, and to the DNA of the Country Liberal Party, which is why we're building on last year's budget to transform Territory parks," Minister Boothby said.
"This major boost means families can cook up a storm as we upgrade barbecues from Charles Darwin and Berry Springs through to Nitmiluk and the West Macs."
"Adventures will benefit as we upgrade walking paths in King Canyon, bike paths in Simpsons Gap, footpaths in Casuarina Coastal Reserve, and roads for 4WD enthusiasts in places like Limestone Gorge.
"Campground upgrades, interactive signage, trail markers, and fast-tracked maintenance works will open the door to locals and visitors across the regions."
Minister Boothby said that parks were an essential part of the Territory's value proposition as the best place to visit, invest, and lay down your roots.
"Tour operators, hospitality venues, accommodation providers, and retailers right across the Territory, but particularly in our regions, rely on visitation to our parks.
"At the same time, parks access and outdoor recreation go to the heart of the liveability of our regions, which is why investing in parks is core to our plan to rebuild the economy and restore our lifestyle."
Whether it's the New York Times showcasing Top End parks like Kakadu, or the BBC putting the Red Centre on the map, the world is taking notice of the Territory like never before.
"In our year of growth, certainty and security, we will build on that interest and momentum to position the Territory as a destination of choice for visitors and investors alike."
