Nillumbik Shire Council has adopted its new Nillumbik General Local Law 1, following more than 18 months of extensive community consultation.
The Local Law regulates activities and behaviour across the Shire to ensure public health, safety and amenity, protecting quality of life and enjoyment of public spaces. Some of the matters regulated by the new Local Law include:
• Behaviour in or on Council land;
• Animals and animal noise;
• Consumption of liquor in public places;
• Protection of amenity trees;
• Restriction of animals within the Bend of Islands.
The Nillumbik General Local Law 1, together with the Nillumbik General Local Law 1 Procedure and Protocol Manual and Community Impact Statement, were endorsed at the Council meeting on Tuesday 13 December.
Mayor Ben Ramcharan thanked those in the community who provided their input during one of the three phases of consultation in 2021 and 2022. "We received more than 1000 submissions, making this one of the most extensive community engagement projects we have undertaken,"
Cr Ramcharan said. "We have listened to the feedback, ensuring our new Local Law is not only up to date but is an accurate reflection of the values of our community and what is important about life in Nillumbik."
Council will now work to inform the community of the local laws and how to comply with them.
The Nillumbik General Local Law 1(PDF, 2MB) comes into effect on 22 December 2022.
