EU countries lodge formal demarche over Macron's Russia comments

Several European Union (EU) countries, including the Baltic states, have lodged a formal diplomatic complaint over a recent statement made by French President Emmanuel Macron regarding security guarantees for Russia.

Although the exact number of countries supporting the move is currently unknown, Poland and Slovakia joined the demarche with the support of Czechia which holds the EU Council presidency, Reuters learned from diplomats.

In an interview with French TV on 3 December, Macron said as part of developing its future security architecture, Europe needed think "how to give guarantees to Russia the day it returns to the negotiating table".
