The Swedish Central Association for the Promotion of Sports (SCIF) has named Eva Jansson, Professor Emerita at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, as the 2025 recipient of the Major Sports Research Award for an experienced researcher.
Eva Jansson , Professor Emerita at the Department of Laboratory Medicine Karolinska Institutet, has been a pioneering researcher in sports physiology since the early 1970s. Her work has had a profound and lasting impact on both sports and public health.
Through her extensive research on the metabolism and adaptation of the body-particularly skeletal muscle-to physical training among female and male athletes, she has created new and deeper fundamental understanding of how exercise affects human health and performance.
"I feel deeply honored to have been awarded SCIF's major research prize. The award is an important recognition of my research in sports and physical activity over more than 50 years, and of all the colleagues and collaborations that made this exciting journey possible-from the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciencis to Karolinska Institutet," says Eva Jansson.
Eva Jansson has published a very large number of scientific articles and participated in several national and international research projects. Her work has strengthened Sweden's position as a leading country in both exercise physiology and physical activity in healthcare and society.
The award and prize sum of SEK 125,000 are motivated by the fact that Eva Jansson has uniquely combined basic medical research with sports science and clinical application, and has been a driving force in bridging the gap between research and practice. She has played a leading role through her decisive contributions to the creation of the evidence-based healthcare handbook about physical activity in prevention and treatment of disease (FYSS) and the development of physical activity on prescription (FaR).
Eva Jansson will receive her award and give a short lecture on her research during a conference organized by the Swedish Association for Physical Activity and Sports Medicine in April.

Research Scholarships in Sports Science
SCIF has for many years contributed funds to Swedish research in the form of grants for research projects and the awarding of research scholarships.
To stimulate continued research in Sweden, SCIF awards three scholarships for high-quality research deemed to be of great value to Swedish sports. SCIF's major prize goes to an experienced researcher, and SCIF's minor prize goes to two younger researchers who in recent years have produced high-quality research.
