Over 8000 motorists in the Wollongong electorate did not make a claim for a Compulsory Third Party (CTP) refund missing out on just over $366,000 in unclaimed money.
The figures have been revealed following questions to the Minister for Customer Service, Victor Dominello MP, by Member for Wollongong, Paul Scully MP, which asked the Minister to list the number and total amounts of unclaimed refunds by suburb in the Wollongong electorate.
Of 22 local suburbs from Towradgi to Windang, the figures show that 8,290 businesses and individuals failed to make a claim on their CTP refunds.
A total of $366,268.06 remains unclaimed just for motorists in the Wollongong electorate alone.
Refunds of up to $120 could be claimed from a Service NSW Centre, online or over the phone.
Motorists had until 30 September 2019 to claim the refund. The Berejiklian Government has announced no more refunds will be provided.
The Government claims that unclaimed refunds will now be returned to motorists by reducing the levies, which are paid as part of a CTP Premium.
Wollongong suburbs with the highest unclaimed CTP refund amounts were:
- Wollongong $79,092.88
- Figtree $37,603.29
- Berkeley $29,115.40
- Fairy Meadow $25,359.64
- Unanderra $21,591.87
- Port Kembla $19,294.43
- Warrawong $17,779.49
- Lake Heights $15,703.98
Mr Scully said he was surprised to learn that so many people, including the owners of businesses had failed to claim their CTP refunds by the 30 September 2019 deadline.
"I'm particularly concerned to see that the highest amounts of unclaimed CTP refunds are in many of the most socio-economically disadvantaged areas of the Wollongong electorate.
"I'm also concerned, based on these figures, that there may be people in our community missing out on other rebates that they are entitled to from the Government", he said.
