Giving community tools to take climate action

Yarra Council is partnering with Darebin and Moreland Councils to help people who want to take effective action on climate change.

"The Community Skills for Climate Action Program supports people to come together and take effective climate action whether this be through conversations, education, local projects or advocacy campaigns," Yarra Mayor Cr Gabrielle de Vietri said.

The nine-session training program which begins in September, is currently accepting applications. Darebin, Moreland and Yarra Councils are working together to fund and deliver this program.

"We are really proud to be partnering with neighbouring councils to deliver this important program."

"We are all in this together, and to tackle climate change, we need everyone to play their part.

This series aligns with Yarra's Climate Emergency Plan, which was unanimously adopted by Yarra Council in 2020 and is one of the first of its kind from an Australian council.

"An important priority in our Climate Emergency Plan is to mobilise and engage the community on climate change," Cr de Vietri said.

"Yarra has a long and proud history of taking bold climate action, as one of the first local governments to declare a climate emergency in 2017."

"We set high expectations to deliver a best-practice local government climate emergency response, and I am incredibly proud to say we delivered," she said.

Yarra's operations are powered by 100% renewable electricity thanks to an investment in solar and our involvement in the Melbourne Renewable Energy Project.

Last year Yarra's leadership in this space was recognised when it received the Climate Champion Award in the Cities Power Partnership Climate Awards 2020.
