Nillumbik Mayor Frances Eyre today welcomed the announcement by the Federal Member for McEwen, Rob Mitchell, the Federal Member for Jagajaga, Kate Thwaites and State Member for Eltham, Vicki Ward of $357,183 grant funding from the State and Regional Priority Projects Grant Program to fund the critical community preparedness and resilience building program 'Disaster Resilient Nillumbik'.
The funding is part of $1.8 million the Federal Government has allocated for five innovative projects in Victoria that aim to lessen the effect of catastrophic natural events and will be delivered under the National Partnership (NPA) between the Commonwealth and Victorian governments.
Nillumbik Mayor Frances Eyre said the funding will be used to employ a full time project officer to oversee all aspects of the disaster preparedness and resilience project, a real time emergency exercise to improve preparedness, and to further support the 'Community Connector Program'.
"I would like to thank the Federal Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell, the Federal Member for Jagajaga Kate Thwaites and the State Member for Eltham Vicki Ward for their support in securing this funding that will allow Nillumbik Council to work towards keeping the community safe by improving disaster preparedness and resilience," Cr Eyre said.
"We all know how devastating catastrophic weather events and natural disasters can be so it is vital that we strengthen our disaster preparedness right across the community.
"Council will continue to work with the community to ensure the success of the 'Disaster Resilient Nillumbik' project."
Nillumbik Shire Council acknowledges the support of the Victorian Government.
