His Majesty King Charles III has been proclaimed as the new Sovereign of Australia by Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria, during a ceremony today at Government House.
This follows His Majesty's accession being proclaimed in the United Kingdom yesterday and his proclamation as the new Sovereign of Australia by the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd).
The proclamation was jointly signed by the Governor, the Premier, the Chief Justice, the President of the Legislative Council and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
King Charles III has visited Victoria on many occasions. His first trip to the state was an extended one in 1966, when His Majesty spent two terms studying at Geelong Grammar School's Timbertop Campus.
Most recently King Charles III visited Victoria in 2012 with Her Royal Highness The Queen Consort, as part of The Late Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Following the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Victorian Parliament will adjourn for one week as a mark of respect.
Both Houses of Parliament will sit on Tuesday so that Members of the Assembly and Council can be sworn by oath or affirmation, followed by a condolence motion to express sorrow at the death of Her Majesty.
The Parliament will then adjourn for one week as a mark of respect and return to sit on Tuesday 20 September and Wednesday 21 September.
