Improvements to greens at Horsham Golf Club

New life has been given to the greens at the Horsham Golf Club, with the installation of a new sprinkler irrigation system.

The additional system was installed with funding of $2000 received from Horsham Rural City Council's Community Development Grants program.

"We have sprinkler coverage for the main section of the greens, but the course's edges were very bare, with varying levels of grass," said Course Committee Chairman, Iain McNee.

"Playing a shot where the green slopes away from you is already difficult in the best of conditions, but on those poor surfaces it was made near impossible".

The new irrigation system ensures those areas of turf are receiving sufficient watering for healthy growth.

"Hitting off from a poor surface can make things quite difficult, whereas hitting off from grass makes for a better and more consistent shot", Mr McNee said.

The improved greens were put to the test recently, as the Horsham Golf Club hosted the 2020 Victorian Men's and Women's Senior Amateur Championship.

"We've been receiving praise from lots of talented players who have come from all over to participate in the championships. They've been very impressed with the quality of our course", Mr. McNee said.

"We're ranked in the top 100 golf courses in Victoria, and this new addition has really cemented us as a very well-rounded course".

This year's HRCC Community Development Grants saw 68 successful applicants from community and sporting groups receive a total funding of $201,436. The next round of Community Grant will be open in February 2021.
