- Japanese artist Takeshi Tanabe announced as Tourism Western Australia's Invited International Artist for Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe 2023

A spectacular light installation shining two kilometres into the sky will be exhibited by a renowned international artist as part of the annual Sculpture by the Sea at Cottesloe.
Japanese artist Takeshi Tanabe's light artwork 'Between Sky and Earth (Exchanging Messages)' will be among more than 70 artworks on display at the popular event, which will take place from 3 to 20 March 2023.
The artwork will feature a light monument that shines two kilometres upwards into the night sky from the end of the groyne at Cottesloe Beach.
Each year as part of Sculpture by the Sea, Tourism Western Australia invites an artist from one of its 11 key international markets to show an exclusive artwork at the event.
Tanabe will be Tourism WA's Invited International Artist for the 2023 event.
Japan is a priority tourism market for WA, with nearly 40,000 Japanese visitors injecting around $71 million into the WA economy in 2019
Air Nippon Airways recently announced direct flights between Tokyo and Perth will resume in October 2023.
Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe is supported by the WA Government, through Tourism WA, and Lotterywest.
As stated by Tourism Minister Roger Cook:
"The Western Australian Government is honoured to host an artist as renowned as Takeshi Tanabe as this year's Invited International Artist, as we celebrate the upcoming return of direct flights between Japan and Perth later this year.
"Takeshi Tanabe's unique light monument will perfectly showcase WA's iconic Cottesloe Beach and our spectacular coastline to the world, and we expect it to be a popular attraction at this year's Sculpture by the Sea.
"I encourage Western Australians to head down and view all the world-class works on display from more than 70 artists as part of Sculpture by the Sea, when the free exhibition returns to our shores in March."
