Work is continuing to establish Tasmania's own on-island Strategic Fuel Reserve, following initial investigations undertaken after the Premier's request to the Director of Energy Planning in March.
Despite the recent fire at the Viva Energy refinery in Geelong, Tasmania's fuel supply remains secure.
With Tasmania's strong new fuel laws now in place, the Government will require Viva Energy to provide all necessary information.
Latest numbers show Tasmania has 85 days of petrol and 48 days of diesel between stock at hand and stock in transit.
Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan, said our Government continues to take strong and decisive action on fuel.
"Today, we have announced that work has begun to establish our own on-island strategic fuel reserve," Minister Duigan said.
"We are working through a process to identify the best opportunities to utilise any latent fuel storage capacity outside our fuel terminals.
"Potential storage opportunities have already been identified, including three decommissioned tanks at Self's Point, which could provide an additional 12 million litres of storage if brought back online.
"We are also looking at sourcing additional diesel supplies to provide a ready reserve to protect our transport and agricultural sectors.
"This is a top priority for us, and we look forward to providing more information as this work progresses."
Next week, Minster for Small Business, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Guy Barnett, will be travelling to Singapore on a Trade and investment mission.
"Fuel security will be a key focus, and we are in the process of securing key meetings as part of the visit," Minister Barnett said.
"This will be an important opportunity to advocate for Tasmania's fuel needs as we continue work to establish our own on-island strategic fuel reserve.
"I look forward to advocating directly for Tasmania's best interests."
