Finding the right support
As a proud First Nations mother, Jannette wanted to explore her education and employment options while continuing to care for her family. She had also experienced some personal challenges and was looking for support from people who understood her circumstances.
After hearing about Parent Pathways through word of mouth, Jannette connected with her local provider for support on her parenting journey. Working with her mentors, she explored her interests and mapped out goals for the future. From the moment she arrived, she felt she had found a welcoming and supportive community.
"The first time I walked into the office, I felt welcomed by all the staff. It was friendly and gave me a community feel, and I felt a part of the community. I felt that the staff could relate to me as a mother." - Jannette
Following her passion
Through personalised mentoring and goal planning, Jannette discovered a clear direction. Together with her mentor, she explored study options that would allow her to pursue something she genuinely enjoyed.
"All the mentors were welcoming, and I could go there for a yarn and a cuppa. They didn't push me out and took the time with me." - Jannette
During these conversations, Jannette reflected on her love of being outdoors and her connection to Country. This led her to explore courses in Conservation and Ecosystem Management.
"I enjoyed the independence and growth in working through my course, being outdoors and on Country." - Jannette
Parent Pathways supported Jannette's journey by helping with her course fees and providing work boots to support both her studies and employment opportunities.
Looking ahead
Jannette continues to pursue opportunities that align with her passion for working outdoors and on Country. Prior to commencing her studies, Jannette secured six weeks of employment as a Cultural Liaison Officer, gaining valuable experience while building towards her longer-term goals.
Today, she remains focused on creating opportunities for herself and her family. She has also embraced opportunities to connect with other parents and local services through Parent Pathways events.
"I'm really excited for the future and being able to achieve new goals." - Jannette
Celebrating 50 Years of Deadly
Jannette's journey reflects the spirit of NAIDOC Week 2026's theme, 50 Years of Deadly, celebrating strength, resilience and the power of community. With support from Parent Pathways, she is continuing to pursue opportunities that align with her passion for working on Country and creating new possibilities for her family.
For Jannette, that future is about continuing her learning journey, working on Country and showing her children what is possible when you follow your passion.
