The McGowan Government has funded efforts to promote Lake Kununurra as a must-visit fishing location for Australian and international anglers.
Thanks to the dedication of the Lake Kununurra Barramundi Stocking Group, the support of Recfishwest and funding through the McGowan Government's $6 million COVID-19 recreational fishing stimulus package, a new website has been established to promote the world-class fishing destination.
The new website at lakekununurrabarramundi.com.au provides great resources for planning a fishing visit - with information on where and how to fish, together with great videos and photos. There is also information on local accommodation options and tours for anyone planning to visit the region.
Continued support for annual barramundi stocking is part of a three-year commitment to further boost this world-class still-water fishery into an East Kimberley fishing mecca through a program to release three million barramundi fingerlings over three years.
To date, 1.3 million barramundi have been released into Lake Kununurra since the stocking program began in 2013 and has resulted in regular catches of fish over the magic one-metre mark on the lake.
In the past two weeks, the stocking group has released another 300,000 barramundi into the lake to help enhance the fishery for the benefit of tourists and East Kimberley residents who enjoy wetting a line alike.
As stated by Fisheries Minister Don Punch:
"Recfishwest and the local Lake Kununurra Barramundi Stocking Group should be congratulated for their commitment to support the fishery and enhance the community benefits that come from having such a great tourist attraction in the East Kimberley.
"Having an online presence, via the new website, helps to introduce Lake Kununurra sportfishing to a new audience and potential holiday-makers from interstate and overseas.
"North Regional TAFE in Broome is also doing a great job in supporting the growth of the fishery, rearing the barramundi at its aquaculture facility before they are transported to Lake Kununurra for release."

"Lake Kununurra is home to some fantastic barra fishing - and this great new website will help promote Kununurra as an essential fishing destination to the rest of Australia and the world.
"It is great to see benefits flowing into the Kimberley from the McGowan Government's COVID-19 recreational fishing recovery funding, as we know supporting recreational fishing helps boost regional economies and create local tourism jobs."
