City of Darwin advises that access onto Mindil Beach will be limited for the reopening of the Mindil Beach Sunset Market today, Thursday 30 April, due to tidal erosion and storm surge impacts.
Wet season sand erosion has closed six of the seven beach access points, resulting in temporary closures to ensure public safety.
Assessment for rectification works can only commence once the seasonal storm surge and tidal conditions have passed for the season and this was not reached until mid-April
One access path remains open to support entry to the beach during the market and for the fireworks display.
"We are working in accordance with the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority (AAPA) Certificate and were hoping to be able to open up additional access points before the markets commenced," said Lord Mayor Peter Styles.
"We were hopeful the remedial works could be completed prior to the first market of the season; however, unfortunately unfavourable storm surge and tidal conditions have meant works could not commence as planned."
"Attendees are asked to be patient, arrive early and to allow extra time when entering and exiting the beach," he said.
"The Mindil Beach Sunset Market kicks off the Dry Season event calendar, and we're excited to welcome the community back for another vibrant season of food, culture and entertainment," Mr Styles said.
"While access is temporarily limited, we hope everyone heads down to the market to support stall holders and the organisers for a great opening night," he said.
City of Darwin will carry out remediation works as soon as conditions allow. It is anticipated that broader access rectification works, in accordance with our AAPA permit conditions, can be able to be undertaken from Thursday 7 May.
City of Darwin thanks the community for its understanding and cooperation to help keep the event safe for all.
