Major Upgrade For Mildura's 'worst Road'

A major upgrade to one of Mildura's most deteriorated roads is now locked in, with Transport Victoria set to begin rehabilitation works on a 600‑metre section of Seventh Street in early May 2026.

The project - strongly advocated for by Mildura Rural City Council and widely supported by the community - will take around nine weeks to complete, weather permitting. Works will occur at night between 5.30pm and 7am to minimise daytime disruption.

Transport Victoria is responsible for major highways and arterial roads such as Benetook Avenue, Fifteenth Street, Deakin Avenue, the Calder Highway and the section of Seventh Street that will undergo repair, while Mildura Rural City Council maintains all local roads.

An online survey run by Mayor Ali Cupper earlier this year, which attracted hundreds of responses, identified the section of Seventh Street between Benetook Avenue and Etiwanda Avenue as the community's top priority for repair.

"People told us loudly and clearly that this was Mildura's worst road - and we listened," Cr Cupper said. "We took that message to Transport Victoria and the community backed it in, so it shows the power of our collective voice.

"Seventh Street is a key connection for local businesses, families and freight, and these repairs will make a real difference. It's a great example of Council advocating on behalf of our residents and the government responding."

A Transport Victoria spokesperson said the works were part of its broader statewide maintenance program.

"We're rebuilding, repairing and resurfacing roads right across the state, including key routes in the Loddon Mallee," the spokesperson said. "Seventh Street is an important connection for the Mildura community, and these works will help ensure it remains safe and reliable."

The upgrade will include pavement improvements and spray sealing. During construction, lane closures, detours and a 40km/h speed limit will be in place. Roadside parking will be restricted, and some property access may be temporarily limited outside working hours.

Residents and businesses have been notified directly. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
