Mayor, Premier Discuss Toowoomba Region Issues

Toowoomba City Hall

Proposed community outcomes for reducing crime throughout the Toowoomba Region were at the top of the agenda when Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio met with the Queensland Premier and Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Annastacia Palaszczuk earlier today.

Mayor Antonio thanked the Premier for coming to Toowoomba to further discuss actions the State Government will implement in the coming months.

"It was a productive meeting where the Premier spoke about youth programs and joint initiatives that both levels of government working together could deliver," Mayor Antonio said.

"She understands the issues we're currently experiencing and has committed to providing additional resources where necessary.

"I've made the undertaking that we will keep the Premier updated on the impact the State Government's new initiatives on crime reduction are having on our community."

While speaking to the Premier, Mayor Antonio used this opportunity to raise other matters of importance to the Region.

"This was a good chance to discuss items like funding for the Railway Parklands and housing concerns," Mayor Antonio said.

"We discussed our long-term sustainability with several large Council led major projects, including the dam safety upgrades and future upgrades to our water infrastructure.

"In addition to this, we spoke about the recent commitment of funding for the Toowoomba Sports Stadium upgrade and, more broadly, legacy projects from the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics.

"There is a real opportunity to establish an equestrian centre of excellence at the Toowoomba Showgrounds and the possibility of creating a second equine quarantine centre in Australia.

"This would leave a remarkable legacy for our Region that would contribute substantially to our economic development.

"It's clear the best way for our community to move forward is through strong partnerships, and the Premier has shown her support to assist us with short-term challenges and our long-term aspirations."
