Keep Australia Beautiful Week starts on Monday, August 3, and is a timely reminder that small local actions can make a visible difference.
Litter and illegal dumping affect parks, streets, verges and natural areas across the City of Swan. Residents can help keep these spaces clean and cared for by joining the Adopt-a-Spot program.
Delivered in partnership with Keep Australia Beautiful WA, the program supports individuals, schools, businesses and community groups to care for local parks, streets, verges and reserves.
To get involved, choose a local place that would benefit from regular care and commit to organising several clean-ups throughout the year. This could be your favourite park, street, verge, bush trail or another public space within the City of Swan.
Registered volunteers receive insurance, an official adoption certificate and a free clean-up kit containing rubbish bags, gloves and litter tongs. After registering through the Western Australian Government website, volunteers can contact the City to arrange collection of the rubbish gathered during their clean-ups.
There are also other practical ways to help. Residents can report litter and illegal dumping, become a registered Litter Reporter, or take eligible household waste to the City's recycling centres free of charge.
Residents who would like to help care for a natural area can also join a local Friends Group. These community conservation groups undertake activities such as removing weeds, planting native species, collecting litter, monitoring wildlife and restoring habitat.
Whether you clean up a local park, report illegal dumping or join a Friends Group, every action helps keep the City of Swan and Australia beautiful.
