Monash Maintains Global Rank in 2026 World Universities

Monash University

Monash has retained its place of 76th in the world in the ShanghaiRanking Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2026, cementing its standing among the world's top institutions.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Sharon Pickering said maintaining the 76th spot globally was a testament to the quality, depth and reach of our research and education.

"Our consistent performance in these rankings is a direct reflection of the dedication of our staff and broader university community, whose commitment to excellence continues to make a profound impact on a global scale. I extend my sincere gratitude and congratulations to every colleague whose hard work and commitment continues to drive our successes," Professor Pickering said.

ARWU evaluates more than 2500 universities annually and publishes the top 1000. Six objective indicators are used to compile the ARWU, comprising the number of:

  • Alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
  • Highly Cited (HiCi) Researchers selected by the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate
  • Articles published in the journals of Nature and Science
  • Articles indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index™ in the Web of Science
  • Per capita academic performance.

Last year, 27 Monash University researchers achieved HiCi status, increasing from 23 in 2024 and 17 in 2023. Monash research continued to be recognised in the prestigious Nature and Science journals for their contributions to global scientific dialogue, including Professor Sureshkumar Balasubramanian's work on thermal sensing in plants and Dr Felicity McCormack's research on Antarctic ice loss among many others.

This result follows Monash's outstanding performance in global university rankings released this year including QS World University Rankings 2027 and US News and World Report Best Global Universities 2026-27 in which we placed 31st and 38th respectively.
