Myths and truths about sexual assault

April of 2023 marks the 22nd anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which has helped increase the public understanding of common misperceptions that may have been mainstream a few decades ago, said Jennifer Donelan, a board-certified family nurse practitioner in the Gynecology and Sexual Health Clinic at the UF Student Health Care Center.

Yet, certain myths continue to persist despite widespread education, which may contribute to victim blaming and make it difficult for survivors to come forward and seek help, said Donelan, who is a trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner.
