National Industry PhD Program Funds Innovative Research

Dept of Education, Skills and Employment

The National Industry PhD Program offers PhD candidates the opportunity to work on industry-focused research projects that strengthen Australia's research and innovation capability.

Up to $14.2 million will be invested in 46 Industry Linked PhD places and 45 Industry Research PhD places approved under Round 7 over the next 3 to 8 years.

PhD candidates will undertake research including the development of a natural, eco-friendly additive to make pesticides more effective while reducing environmental impact and costs; research into bull shark behaviour and ecology to better understand risks and improve safety for beachgoers, and the development of safer, more reliable biodegradable orthopaedic implants that maintain strength during the healing process.

Xu Wang is an academic supervisor from RMIT working with industry partner Delta-v Experts to develop a device for roadside poles to enhance road safety. The device aims to reduce forces transferred to vehicle occupants on impact. This project will improve roadside safety standards and support broader adoption of enhanced pole protection systems, contributing to reduced road trauma.

In crash reconstruction, we are often asked to investigate collisions after lives have already been changed forever. Rarely do we have the opportunity to help prevent those tragedies before they occur," Xu said.

Receiving this funding is both an honour and a responsibility. It allows us to work with Delta-v Experts to develop innovative roadside safety technologies that have the potential to reduce deaths and serious injuries caused by vehicle impacts with poles and fixed infrastructure.

This project demonstrates how universities and industry can work together to turn research into practical solutions that make our roads safer and deliver lasting benefits to the community."

Applications for Round 8 open on 13 July 2026 and close on 21 August 2026. Applications need to be submitted by an Australian university. To find out how you can participate, complete the short Expression of Interest form or email
