Never Miss Beat - Heart Week 2025

NSW Nationals

Coffs Coast residents are urged to put their heart health first this Heart Week (5-11 May), with the theme "Never Miss A Beat."

Nationals Member for Coffs Harbour and Shadow Minister for Regional Health Gurmesh Singh is encouraging locals to take up the fight against cardiovascular disease – Australia's leading cause of death – which claims over 40,000 lives annually.

Mr Singh said with nearly half of all people in Australia unaware of their family history of heart disease – a critical risk factor – starting a conversation about heart health has never been more important.

"Knowing your risk of developing heart disease is one of the most critical steps you can take to protect your health," Mr Singh said.

"I strongly encourage everyone eligible to book a Medicare-subsidised Heart Health Check through their GP. This simple 20-minute assessment can be life-saving, helping identify your risk and guiding you on how to manage it effectively."

Heart Foundation Senior Healthcare Programs Manager Natalie Raffoul emphasised the impact of Heart Health Checks.

"Since Medicare introduced Heart Health Checks in 2019, over 850,000 Australians have benefitted, significantly reducing their risk of heart attacks and strokes," Ms Raffoul said.

"With tools like the Aus CVD Risk calculator, GPs are equipped to give clear and actionable steps for a healthier future. Understanding your family history and overall risk is crucial, and a Heart Health Check is the best way to achieve this."

During Heart Week, the Heart Foundation encourages you to:

• Book a Heart Health Check – if you're aged 45 or over (30+ for First Nations peoples, 35+ if you have diabetes), book your 20-minute, Medicare-subsidised assessment with your GP to manage your heart disease risk effectively.

• Spread awareness – encourage friends and family to prioritise heart health. Learn more at www.heartfoundation.org.au/heart-week

"Heart Week is about individual responsibility as well as collective action," Mr Singh said.
