The number of new homes that commenced construction in Western Australia grew by 15.2 per cent to 24,223 over the year to March 2026, outpacing national growth of 12 per cent, according to new Australian Bureau of Statistics data.
Growth in commencements was bolstered by a 41 per cent increase in the number of multi-residential developments getting off the ground, including townhouses and apartments.
The number of new homes under construction also climbed to 26,741 in the March quarter.
There were 5,052 dwelling completions in the 2026 March quarter, representing a 10.8 per cent jump since the previous quarter and compared with a decrease of 0.4 per cent nationally.
In the year to the March quarter 2026, an additional 20,000 dwellings were completed in WA, following 22,563 homes completed in June 2025.
The strong growth in commencements is expected to flow through to higher completions in the coming quarters.
WA is also one of the strongest performing States in its progress towards its National Housing Accord target, with more than 37,300 homes built since September 2024.
This is equivalent to 82.6 per cent of the State's housing target to date, with Western Australia tracking ahead of national progress of 73.2 per cent.
The continued positive results show the Cook Labor Government's broad range of measures to boost housing supply are working, backed by a record $10.8 billion investment since 2021.
The construction industry workforce is also at record levels, totalling 172,500 in February, supporting the delivery of more homes across the State.
As stated by Treasurer Rita Saffioti:
"The Cook Labor Government is committed to driving housing supply and improving affordability, backed by a record $10.8 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures since 2021.
"These figures show our State has a strong housing supply pipeline, with dwelling commencements at their highest level in more than four years.
"This means more homes are on the way for Western Australian families and will support more jobs across our growing construction workforce."
As stated by Housing and Works Minister John Carey:
"The latest ABS figures show home completions are up 10.8 per cent in Western Australia - bucking the national trend, which saw a 0.4 per cent decline.
"The number of homes under construction increased to 26,741 in the March quarter, up from 25,443 in the December quarter and indicating a strong pipeline of future housing.
"We never draw a line in the sand, and that's why the Cook Labor Government is continuing its efforts to enable more housing and density, including through Station Precincts and changes to the Residential Codes."
