Work is progressing on a new viewing platform and weather shelter on Mt Noorat.

Construction is underway and the mount is still open to visitors via the signed detours.

Mt Noorat Management Committee Chairperson Will Conheady asked walkers visiting the Mount to follow detour signs for their safety and so works can be completed as quickly as possible.

Mr Conheady said, despite a few weather delays, construction is expected to be complete by late-May.

"It's coming along well. We're pretty excited," he said.

"These facilities are in keeping with our progressive ideas and other updates such as the walking track improvements, seating, signage and accessibility.

"They are the culmination of work over the past five years to improve the whole walking experience."

Mr Conheady said the well-built structures would serve visitors to the mount well into the future.

"A lot of consideration has been put into the designs," he said.

"The Management Committee chose colours and curvatures on both structures to be harmonious with the local environment.

"We did not wish to have modern structures dominating the landscape or having a presence on natural sight lines.

"This is a key part of our long-term management plan to maintain the mountain's natural beauty.

"That was the aim and I'm really pleased that we've been able to achieve it."

The new platform and shelter have been designed for the harsh environment and will be durable, long-term assets to Mount Noorat.

The old, treated pine viewing platform on the edge of the crater had reached the end of its useful life.

The new platform will be in the same footprint of the old platform and have views looking north-west towards the crater.

The shelter, about 50 metres down the gravel path, will be oriented to avoid prevailing winds.

Seating and information signs will be installed and native tussock grass planted around the new structures.

An opening event will be held with date and format to be decided.

The project is the work of the Mt Noorat Management Committee which is responsible for implementing the 30-year vision of the Mt Noorat Management Plan which aims to provide quality visitor experiences.
