Next Stop For Woden: New Interchange Opens Today

The new Woden Interchange has opened today, delivering improved access to public transport and helping transform the Woden town centre into a connected, vibrant destination for Canberra's south.

The interchange will support more than 10,000 Canberrans transiting on buses each day and delivers increased capacity, modern shelters, improved accessibility and landscaping, toilets and secure bike storage.

With the temporary bus interchange now being decommissioned, work can now be finalised on a new public plaza adjacent to the interchange known as the North Plaza which will provide a new green space in addition to the Western Plaza of the CIT Campus.

This also allows work to be finalised on the Bowes/Bradley St local access shared zone which is critical for accessibility with a pick up and drop off points close to the Westfield entrance, the CIT campus and the new Woden interchange.

The Woden Interchange forms part of the biggest investment in Woden since self‑government and is central to the ongoing renewal of the town centre.

Minister for Transport Chris Steel said the new interchange was designed to meet the needs of a growing Woden Valley.

"The new Woden Interchange delivers increased capacity and is future‑proofed to support the arrival of mass-transit light rail in Woden," the Minister said

"The old interchange was dark, hidden away, and the community was telling us it was unsafe. This new interchange on Callam Street is filled with light, with canopy cover and modern shelters and amenities, and I am proud to have delivered it for the community."

The new interchange builds on a series of major investments by the ACT Government across the Woden town centre, strengthening its role as a key hub for employment, education, health, and services.

These investments include the new CIT Woden campus and the soon‑to‑open Woden Youth Foyer, the fully electric Woden bus depot, the Critical Services Building at Canberra Hospital, and further commitments to a new Woden Community Centre and Government owned 50m outdoor pool.

"The ACT Government's investments in Woden have been transformational in making the Town Centre a place for people to live, work, study and shop, and there's more to come."
