Nominations open for awards in honour of local hero

Nominations are open for the 2021 Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG Memorial Award. This award celebrates the memory of Gladstone Park local and Australian soldier Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG, by supporting young members of our community to pursue their dreams.

The award provides up to $5000 to young locals who demonstrate the values of our local fallen Australian hero.

Corporal Baird VC MG, is remembered and admired for his selflessness, acts of courage and for his ultimate sacrifice on the battlefield which saw him bravely try to draw enemy fire away from his comrades in Afghanistan. Along with his military service, Corporal Baird VC MG was an active member of our local community who aspired to support and inspire the next generation.

The two categories which Hume residents between the ages of 12-25 can apply for are:

  • Leading from the front Achievement Award – where achievements in sports, community, art, employment or education are recognised.
  • Gaining ground Encouragement Award – where a commitment to an area of interest are recognised.

Successful recipients can use the award to fund:

  • education costs
  • conference fees
  • support for personal or professional development
  • equipment (e.g. sports equipment, a computer or software).

The Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG Memorial Award were established by Hume City Council in 2015 to recognise the legacy of Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG, a Hume local and national hero who passed away in 2013. The awards are held biennially.

Nominations close on Monday 19 April 2021.
