Nominations open for Citizen of Year Awards

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin is pleased to open nominations for the Citizen of the Year Awards, which recognise the efforts of those who go above and beyond for the Darwin community.

City of Darwin administers the Citizen of the Year Awards on behalf of the Australia Day Council - Northern Territory and will present the awards at the Australia Day ceremony next year.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the Citizen of the Year Awards were a fantastic way to recognise and celebrate community members who had made a noteworthy contribution to the Darwin community.

"Whether it's a local organisation going over and above to improve the lives of others, role models, community leaders or the quiet achievers among us, we take pride in recognising those who make a real difference," Mr Vatskalis said.

"The Citizen of the Year Awards are City of Darwin's highest recognition of contribution to our city and we are pleased to be able to reward and recognise individuals and groups that have helped to improve the lives of others," he said.

There are three award categories; the Citizen of the Year; the Young Citizen of the Year, awarded to an Australian Citizen under 30 years of age; and the Community Activity of the Year, awarded to the person or group who has staged the most outstanding community activity during the past year.

"The selection panel will consider how the nominee has made a significant contribution to the community; whether they have been an inspirational role model; and the impact the individual's contribution had in the local government area," Mr Vatskalis said.

All the awards recognise outstanding contribution and community service in areas such as education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, the arts, the environment and any other area that contributes to the advancement and well-being of a community.

"The best nominations are those that tell a story and capture the characteristics of extraordinary Australians making a difference, and I look forward to seeing the calibre of nominations this year," Mr Vatskalis said.

Short-listed nominees will be invited to attend an announcement event on Monday 22 January 2024 and the Award winners will be invited to attend the Australia Day ceremony presentation on Friday 26 January 2024.

Nominations close on Friday 1 December 2023. Visit darwin.nt.gov.au/citizenoftheyear2024 to nominate.
