The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Spain agreed to join efforts to promote equality and combat all forms of discrimination and violence against women during a ceremony held today at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.
OAS Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin said he was "convinced that this alliance will generate meaningful initiatives and tangible results for women, while further strengthening cooperation and solidarity between our two regions. Thank you, and I look forward to the important work ahead of us."
Secretary General Ramdin highlighted Spain's support for the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) and added that, through initiatives such as training courses for women candidates, the Model Law on Parity, and the High-Level Panel on Democracy and Women's Rights, "Spain has contributed to advancing a more inclusive and representative hemisphere."
For her part, the Minister of Equality of the Kingdom of Spain, Ana María del Carmen Redondo, reaffirmed Spain's commitment to the values of the OAS. "The international situation calls for alliances in favor of peace, equality, and democracy. We are committed to advancing shared knowledge, strengthening the repository of best practices included in the memorandum we signed today, and promoting the equality agenda," Minister Redondo said.
The agreement will be implemented through Spain's Ministry of Equality and the CIM, and provides for the exchange of information and best practices on women's rights, as well as the exchange of experts between the two institutions for training activities, technical assistance missions, and participation in events of common interest. It also includes plans to carry out awareness-raising campaigns on women's leadership, women's economic rights, and discrimination and violence against women.
