Police charge three after pursuit at Lake Illawarra

Three people have been charged following a pursuit in the state's Illawarra region yesterday.

About 2.15pm (Thursday 1 July 2021), officers attached to South East Region Enforcement Squad (RES) were patrolling the Berkeley area, when they observed a BMW 530i – reportedly stolen from Albion Park Rail just before 11am - on Nolan Street and attempted to stop it.

The BMW failed to stop and accelerated away. A pursuit was initiated travelling through Unanderra before being terminated at Figtree due to safety concerns.

Shortly after, police received information that the BMW had been abandoned on Southspur Street, Cordeaux Heights with the occupants fleeing.

A search was conducted with the assistance of PolAir and the Dog Unit, and a 29-year-old man was arrested a short distance away on Taminga Crescent.

A 39-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were also arrested after being located in bushland on the same street.

All three were taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.

The older man was charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive recklessly, drive conveyance without consent of owner, drive manner dangerous and possess prohibited weapon.

The younger man was charged with being carried in conveyance. An outstanding warrant was also executed.

They were both refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local court today (Friday 2 July 2021).

The woman was charged with being carried in conveyance and granted conditional bail to appear at Port Kembla Local Court on Wednesday 1 September 2021.
