Police make arrest after theft of designer handbags in Southbank

Police have arrested a woman in relation to designer handbag thefts in Southbank last month.

It's alleged a woman attended a shop at the Whiteman Street complex about 12.50pm on 19 May.

The woman requested to try on some handbags before further requesting to try on some shoes.

As an employee went to retrieve shoes from the storeroom, the woman allegedly concealed the handbags in another bag and fled the store.

A 21-year-old Indonesian national was arrested at Melbourne Airport on 7 June attempting to fly to Indonesia.

The woman was in possession of allegedly stolen high end clothing and accessories worth an estimated $50,000.

A search warrant was executed at a Carlton address with further allegedly stolen items located.

The woman has been charged with theft and handle stolen goods and has been bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 2 October.
