A failure to properly control sediment from leaving a construction site has cost builder John Holland a $5,769 Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) fine.
Melbourne Water is replacing three aging sections of its water mains systems between Mitcham and Syndal.
John Holland provides is working on the project but in September 2023, EPA officers saw sediment laden liquid running into Norcal Road, Nunawading, and then to a stormwater drain.
"The only thing we want to see running down our stormwater drains is rainwater and this was more like liquid mud," EPA North Metro Regional Acting Manager Mike Tangtatco said.
"John Holland is a very experienced builder and we have a high expectation they will conduct their business with proper regard to protecting the environment.
"They failed on this occasion and a fine is appropriate."
An EPA notice was also issued requiring the installation of controls to prevent sediment discharging from the site including from truck movements.
