'Public health is all around us'

Centering and Celebrating Cultures in Health

Events around The University of Texas at Arlington aim to show the importance that public health workers have in the community as part of National Public Health Week, which began April 3.

"Public health is all around us. But many people are not exactly sure what public health is except what they remember from the COVID-19 pandemic," said Rebecca Garner, clinical associate professor and director of the Bachelor of Science in Public Health program. "National Public Health Week is a great time to raise awareness about the importance of public health, focus on how broad the field is and how students can get involved during their undergraduate careers and beyond."

This year's National Public Health Theme is "Centering and Celebrating Cultures in Health," with a focus on the unique and joyful ways different cultures focus on their own health. Some highlights of UTA campus events include:

  • From 1-2:20 p.m. April 5, hear about how the Dallas Cowboys and AT&T Stadium prepare for emergencies from Assistant General Manager Amy Foreman, in Room 245E in the College of Business.
  • From 8 a.m.-noon April 6, three county health departments, along with several non-profit organizations and university partners, will come together for Public Health In Real Life. This mini conference will provide attendees with information related to public health disease prevention. Registration is required and can be completed online.
  • Learn about rural health equity, outcomes and access during Rural Health 101 from noon-1:30 p.m. April 7 in the second floor lounge at the Maverick Activities Center.

Garner touted the week's events as important opportunities to connect public health professionals with each other in settings where they can learn with and from one another.

"This allows our students experiential learning opportunities to reflect on where they are and where they are headed, on both personal and professional levels," she said.
